Zirconia Ceramics Applications
There are several types of zirconia ceramics, the most common being yttrium oxide partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) and magnesium oxide partially stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ). Its unique resistance to crack propagation and high thermal expansion make it an excellent material for joining ceramics to metals such as steel. Because of its unique properties, zirconia is sometimes referred to as “ceramic steel”.

Basic properties of zirconia ceramics
Zirconium oxide generally refers to zirconium dioxide, the chemical formula is ZrO2, is the main oxide of zirconium, usually under the condition of white odorless and tasteless crystals, insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid.
- High density - up to 6.05 g / cm³
- High bending strength and hardness
- Excellent fracture toughness - impact resistance
- Maximum operating temperature up to 1000°C
- Good friction properties
- Low thermal conductivity - close to: 10% of aluminum oxide
- Acid and alkali corrosion resistance
- Modulus of elasticity similar to steel
- Coefficient of thermal expansion similar to iron
