About Zirconia Ceramics (ZrO)2)
Zirconia generally refers to zirconium dioxide, with the chemical formula ZrO2It is the main oxide of zirconium, which is white, odorless and tasteless crystal under normal condition, and is difficult to dissolve in water, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid.
Unlike conventional ceramics, which tend to harden and become brittle, zirconia has a high degree of strength, wear resistance and flexibility that far exceeds that of most other technical ceramics. Zirconia is a very strong industrial ceramic with excellent properties in terms of hardness, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance, which is why it is sometimes referred to as “ceramic steel”.
Zirconia is available in several common grades, the most common being yttrium oxide partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) and magnesium oxide partially stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ). Its unique resistance to crack propagation and high thermal expansion make it an excellent material for joining ceramics to metals such as steel.
Density of zirconia ceramics:
The theoretical density of pure zirconia is 5.89g/cm³, but pure zirconia ceramics are prone to cracking at about 1100℃. Therefore zirconia ceramics need to add yttrium oxide as a stabilizer to achieve stability at room temperature, so yttrium oxide partially stabilized zirconia ceramics have a density of 6.05g/cm³.
Hardness of zirconia ceramics:
Zirconia ceramics are a very strong, advanced ceramic with a Vickers hardness of 1250, and its fracture toughness is so good that it can be used to make a wide variety of knives and ceramic parts.
